The most two plausible scenarios that i've heard so far:
1. They wanted Harsin, who wasn't leaving but told Mizzou to focus on Drinkwitz. Harsin was head coach at Arkansas State and Drink was one of his Offensive Coordinators.
Could also be why Vegas put the odds on Harsin. They probably had the best inside info, which was that Mizzou had been contacting Harsin.
The other could be that:
2. Drink was their top target from the start.
The one scenario that makes zero sense is that Sterk was going after some bumbling fools until the BOC had to point a blind squirrel towards a nut that was right in front of him. Doesn't make sense
