Deserve isn't the word for it.

It's all about what he earned while he was doing it and not what others hoped he might earn in the future. If it's fair to continue with him out of "hope" he would do better, than it's just as fair to can him for believing he wouldn't.

Also, we don't know what his relationship was like with those around him. Like I said before, more can be in play than simply wins and losses. In a hypothetical scenario: If the man was insufferable to his own boss, thinking he was untouchable, that turned out to be a big mistake. He should have been winning big if he wanted to play that game.
