In later interviews Martin played down the petition’s impact on his decision to leave Knoxville, but within the Vols’ locker room, the fan unrest was felt.
“There were mixed emotions for young guys (who thought) here’s our coach, and we’re hearing these things. How do we perceive it?” Martin said Tuesday. “We were trying to win games, but man, it’s strange. I told our guys, ‘It’s life. You continue to push forward. If this is the worst thing you’ll go through in life you’ll have a great life. (It was) just a teaching point. Nothing more or less for me.”
When Martin exited Tennessee for Cal, the most prominent players he left behind threw their support behind their coach on social media, including Jarnell Stokes, Jordan McRae and Josh Richardson. Their voices didn’t go unnoticed.
“They understood he was true to them,” said Harris, now in his third year as the coach at Southern Illinois Edwardsville, “regardless of what was going on from the media standpoint or with the fan base.”
