in the movie, it's a big explosion that paints Dr. Manhattan as a common threat for the US and the Soviet Union.
In the comic, Veidt (and I think we're supposed to assume Jeremy Irons is playing and older version of him) genetically engineered a squid monster that got pegged as an interdimensional threat.
Honestly, that's not the issue with Snyder's vision. He seemed to think the Watchmen (Rorschach in particular) are heroes, which misses the point of what Alan Moore wanted to make.
I like how Lindelof has taken the themes here. Rorschach's no compromise ideals would appeal to white supremacists. The obvious evolution of government sanctioned masks is to make the police into masks.
Interested to see where the twists come in.
