Course set up response to better equipment has been longer courses with wider fairways and less penalty for missing fairways. And technologically no club has had bigger impact than drivers. They are longer and straighter than ever. Therefore, this has evened the playing field off the tee and golf on most of these courses has been reduced to bomb, wedge, and putting contest.
The US team got humiliated in France last year because the course required precision off the tee and there was accountability for missing fairways, something American players are not used to anymore, even in the US Open.
