"Once Zimmer's playing days at Illinois State ended because of a neck injury, he spent a year as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Missouri, before being hired as one of four part-time coaches. Zimmer got a taste of everything, from how to recruit to entrenching himself in the X's and O's of defense under coordinator Carl Reese. Missouri is where Zimmer also met Mike Price, who took him, Bob Bratkowski (who coached in the NFL for 24 years) and another part-time coach to Weber State in 1981, a move Zimmer credits as the true start to his career."
