roster from getting all screwed up, one of the most basic keys is to recruit a PG every other year. Same pretty well goes for your big man if you're trying to have an actual center and not play with 2 forwards.
You're ideal recruiting cycle should look like this:
PG - Wing - Wing/Forward
Center - Wing - Wing/Forward
Repeat.....
We are on cycle to need the next PG and we are behind a cycle for the next big man, but I would be totally surprised if we don't start playing with multiple stretch 4's and few to no centers.
We don't need a PG for the 20-21 season, but we need the PG of the future. Same with a big man. Those two spots are the biggest needs.
But as Domino notes, some of these wings offer the best flexibility and as I note above, you should be bringing in a wing every year too. This is a major reason why I did not fully support our recruiting strategy of leaving only 2 scholarships available for next year.
I'm also not freaking out, because I know they'll make it work one way or another.
Now, I fully realize that my recruiting strategy is a scenario that exists in ideal conditions and that is often difficult to achieve.
But, if you do this, you have proper PG depth at all times. You either have a combo of SR/SO or JR/FR. Same goes with your center.
Then you have 9 scholarships to use across your wings and forwards.
If you recruit a wing in each class, as noted, then you have 4 wings for 2-3 spots at all times. That's 4 more scholarships, leaving 5.
Sign a forward 2 out of every 3 years, and your roster is right on point....always.
Too many people get hung up on the "best player available" concept, whether it's the NFL draft or college recruiting. It's a faulty statement in a great many situations. Not all, but many. "Best player available, at a position you could actually use" is a better mantra.
