If you don't consistently recruit enough high end star players, then the middle and lower level stars are going to play. So using starts or games played may not be a good indicator, because even losing programs will have middle and bottom tier guys playing. It's more about contributions while playing, than playing games.

In basketball, we see those same guys producing because someone had to if they were going to get any production. When we started amassing more talent, you see those guys get pushed down in terms of production.

Kudos to the FB program for finding hidden gems. It's as much about work ethic and continuing to push hard as it is about the initial ranking. Some guys have the stars, but screw up or don't work. Some guys don't and bust their tails.
