puzzle for QB's.
As every should know, the college game was a running game until the last decade...maybe slightly more.
And in those days, you had 3 types of QB systems in decreasing numbers
1. Runners in the option were the most common - Crouch
2. Pro style passers - Leinart
3. What many would call gimmick passers - Ware & Detmer
To win the Heisman, a QB had to be very good in the option and running game on a great team OR put up crazy passing stats in a gimmicky offense for that era.
From Scottsdale's original list, most were runners.
About 5 were pro style passers.
And 3 were gimmick passers.
Guys that were the types of QB's that were going to succeed in the NFL were not putting up the total numbers needed to win the Heisman. Off the top of my head, I can't think of one great NFL QB that won the Heisman other than Staubach.
In the last decade+, the game has changed and both college and the NFL have moved towards a more similar style. Now look at it as 4 types of QB's.
Runners - Crouch
Run around like wildmen and can pass some - Manziel
Passers that can scramble a bit - Mayfield
Passers that can't move - White
Just using guys from the list of the mentioned in this thread.
In the NFL your best QB's are going to be from category 3. You MUST be able to pass at a high level these days above all else. Some mobility helps, but anybody that is run first is not a good NFL QB for long.
Point being, it is easy to explain the Heisman-NFL issue in the past. It is getting harder these days. The NFL is more willing to try on guys like Murray this year and college is producing more prototypical NFL QB's.
