It is perplexing. Butch was a extremely poor developer of talent, so that played a role. Reportedly he petitioned services to inflate ratings for some players. IDK if true or not. He obviously didn't have an eye for low 4 star or 3 star guys that could be developed. Of course that goes back to his lack of player development. We never had depth cause he never created depth. Starters got all the practice reps and game reps so when injury occurred no one was ready. Not to mention how much of a shmuck he really was in dealing with players. Of course they didn't come out until he left. His last year he did nothing in recruiting or anything. He was trying to get fired. The man should never be in charge of a college team again and I wouldn't recommend any player to play for him no matter what.
Weight room work was just a suggestion the last 2-3 years. He stuck his nose into personnel and scheme decisions of his coaches. Case in point, Bob Shoop has been a success every stop he has made except with butch. In cowboy talk he is "all hat and no cattle".
