"Green Globes" are awarded for environmental green building initiatives. Watershed protection associated with parking and hard surface footprint is one of the best ways to certify as "Green" architecture. In the south you can use grass surfaces for overflow parking - especially South Carolina where the soil is mostly sandy and they grow zoysia grass year round. Those drawings show a combination of hard surface parking and grass parking. I'd guess the grass is used for for overflow or gameday tailgate parking when weather permits.
