job security. Now I'm not one to fire people at the drop of a hat, but I believe you need to send a message to head coaches of every sport that mediocrity will not be rewarded with continued employment.
Take Brian Blitz, for example. The dude has been at Mizzou forever and the women's soccer program is going nowhere fast. Other coaches see that he's still employed after years of sub-par results and at least subconsciously think "Heck, I don't need to do much to keep mine."
If, after five or six years, a coach hasn't shown significant progress, it's probably time to cut the cord and look elsewhere.
