If Ohio St had that plan, announcing his retirement prior to the playoff selections might have been a strategy, thinking the committee might favor Ohio St a little more, knowing Urban was going out, as a bit of a last hurrah.
Personally, I think(or at least, I hope) that Ohio St told him about mid-season that he had to go, but let him finish out the year and announce it like it was his decision.
