... and whether or not he has the goods.
We know he doesn't, nor do we likely have anyone on the roster ready for 2019, hence the hard recruiting of Kelly Bryant.
We need him.
And I hope we get him, because he's a winner who can run and throw and he just finds a way into the endzone.
AND... he is a bridge to 2020, when by then we hopefully have the next starter identified.
We are in this position, because we don't have a QB in 2019 that the staff feels like it's good to go.
We knew Daniel was going to the 2006 starter, when he was just a true freshman in 2005.
We knew Gabbert was going to be the 2009 starter, when he was just a true freshman in 2008.
We knew Franklin (most likely) or Tyler Gabbert would take over in 2011 or '12 when Blaine left. We were ready for either scenario if Blaine left for the NFL early.
We knew Maty Mauk would be the 2014 starter, when he was true freshman in 2012. In fact... some thought he may even supplant Franklin in 2013. But there was a definitive line of succession.
Then we had Lock, and knew that he would be taking over in short order. It happened faster than we wanted. But we still had the most important position on the roster identified to be the next guy.
We don't have that today. We have a bunch of backup QBs that are backup QBs. Connor Bazelak is still in high school and I am not sure he is even thought of anywhere close to the same breath as Lock, Daniel, Gabbert and Franklin.
History tells us... we should be pretty confidant in someone on the roster right now to be the next starting QB. Cause when you are... you aren't out there getting transfers that have 1 year, just to bridge a gap.
