to get to the basket to be able to run an efficient offense. Otherwise you become easy to defend as a team and are forced to settle for generally contested jumpers. Dribble penetration disrupts defenses, forces switches, and creates open looks for other players.
I think Watson and Pinson will get there soon. Possibly later this season as they get adjusted to the college game. I also think Mark Smith will be able to once teams start closing out on him more. He may not be the most explosive athlete, but he has the size/strength to use his body to get around people and finish at the rim.
