I don't think Sterk can accept apathy again....

and this is an underrated aspect as to whether a coach gets kept or fired. If you're having a disappointing season but the fanbase is still energized and showing up, that's a point in your favor as a coach.

But if you're having a disappointing year and a devastating loss in a winnable game leads to apathy, after there's already indications of apathy kicking in from the start of the season, you've got a problem that only winning can cure.

Plus, we're in the SEC now. We can only fall a rung or two before we're the laughingstock of the conference. That's not a place we ever want to be.
