Campbell coached 4 full seasons at Toledo before accepting the Iowa State job without interviewing with MU. Outlets reported on 11/27/2015 that Campbell would interview with MU but 2 days later Iowa State announced Campbell as the Clones HC. The STL PD obtained documentation via open records requests that Rhoades did not interview Campbell.
Odom is learning on the job at MU just like every Head Coach learns on the job at his first position. The challenge is that Odom is learning on the job in the SEC. Campbell's first 4 years were in the MAC at Toledo where he was successful but not overwhelmingly so - Tied for first place in the MAC West each of his last 2 years and finishing 24-8 in his 4 full years in conference.
Given that experience, of course Campbell would have been a better hire than Odom but Rhoades was unable to even pull off an interview. That fact should tell you all you need to know about how the MU job was perceived at that time in 2015.
Campbell's reported buyout at ISU is $9.3 million and he knows he'll be first in line at Ohio State whenever that job opens up. Given Meyer's volatility, it's a fairly low risk for Campbell to wait for a possible opening.
If he were decide to take a P5 job before an opening at Ohio State, there will be plenty of suitors.
