The retired coach can't remember the last time the two talked strategy.
"He knows what to do," Keady said. "He was taught right. He listened."
"We just talk about family stuff. And how much he likes Missouri. Norm Stewart was a good friend of mine. I'm always interested in that."
It was Keady who steered Martin toward coaching. Martin was preparing to return to Italy to resume his professional playing career post-cancer when his college coach alerted him about a graduate assistant spot that was opening up. Martin set playing aside, finished his degree, and started teaching Keady's lessons to others. He hasn't stopped.
"I don't have a desire to coach there (Purdue)," Martin said. "I love everything about it. But, my goal is for the guy coaching there now to be there until he retires. And Coach Painter and I are only a year or two apart in age. A wonderful place for me, but it's not in my thought process. I pray that Matt Painter is there forever, and I pray that I am here forever."
