I'd guess the private schools you list in the Wisconsin comparison bring in more research $ per faculty capita than UW, for example. Mizzou obviously can't compare to the faculty and success of Princeton graduates.
For public universities, however, it's a pretty good measure of where you are in the pecking order. Mizzou's ranking is particularly troubling given the fact that it has a medical school. NIH funding is the cash cow. Purdue and Indiana, for example, blow MU away in the research rankings despite not having medical schools on campus (Bloomington can't report Indianapolis numbers).
