would be evaluated for membership on what they bring to the table in existing research. Bringing in strength helps grow the pot for everyone.
Obviously, things like athletic tradition (Nebraska) and TV markets (pretty much everyone else involved in the last round) matter, but Mizzou isn't going to draw much attention based on its current research levels. We're not only behind the schools the Big Ten actually chose, but also places like:
Pittsburgh
Cincinnati
Iowa State
kansas
UConn
Oklahoma
If Mizzou had an elite football or MBB program, perhaps that would be something that could be overcome.
Anyway, the point isn't to belittle Mizzou - it's a good school. I just don't see any reason the Big Ten would regret its choice.
