on the opening drive. We punched them in the mouth and they never recovered. In fact, I think it took them five years to recover from that.

That Illinois team was coming off a Sugar Bowl appearance, but they were led by a senior quarterback Kurt Kittner (spelling) and he took every snap that year except in garbage time. Consequently, the QBs they had returning had zero game experience.

Didn't agree with everything Pinkel did, but one very smart thing he always did was if he had a senior starting quarterback, he made sure the underclassmen who was likely playing the next year got meaningful snaps. Usually a series or two in the second quarter. See Chase Daniels.
