Was looking at past national champs, polls, etc., and Alabama certainly deserved to win the NC in 1978. Their first three games were a 20-3 win against #10 Nebraska, a 38-20 win against #11 Mizzou here and a 24-14 loss to USC. They went undefeated the rest of the way, including a 14-7 win against #1 Penn State in the Sugar Bowl. Nobody plays that kind of non-conference schedule these days.
