Backup for 2 years behind a all-state QB one year ahead of him. Dad played LB for Minnesota and is a Big 10 guy. kU offered after a camp when he had yet to start a game. Dad was recruited by Alvarez when Alvarez coached LBs at Iowa. Mertz was offered by Wisconsin after his 3rd game as a starter, committed, and hasn't looked around. Meanwhile, Minnesota, Ohio State, and Northwestern offered.

Can't get them all and this kid was basically a secret and a Big 10 legacy.
