and not at all worth getting frozen over in person.
Miss State is not a great team by any stretch, they are going to get pounded by the top 20 teams in the SEC. This was absolutely a winnable game, Rice pitched great, but it has to be tough for a freshman to be pitching her heart out and see the defense behind her playing so poorly on what you accurately said were just routine plays. The middle defense by Burnside and Wilmes was just awful. You almost wonder if it's time to pull the plug on Burnside at SS and put her at DH permanently, or try her at 1B and move Pierce somewhere else. We need her power bat in the line up but she doesn't seem to be getting any better in the field, and it's hurting the team. And it seemed to rub off on Rice as she made a huge mental mistake when she had a runner hung up between 2nd and 3rd and instead of running towards the runner and getting the sure out, threw behind her and let her get to 3rd safely. Just a brain lock which will happen to a freshman.
But just as disappointing was the complete lack of clutch hitting. We got shut out by an average pitcher, and we left 11 runners on base. Had the bases loaded with no outs in the 2nd inning and not only couldn't score a single run, we couldn't even get the ball out of the infield. And it was often the veterans who couldn't come through; Nash left 5 runners on for the game and Pierce 4.
Rice pitched well overall but finally wore down, which was not surprising when the offense leaves 11 runners on base and was not capable of giving her a lead to work with and the defense plays poorly behind you and can't get you out of an inning.
I've seen enough of all the SEC teams this year to say with a pretty good degree of confidence that we will go 0-15 against Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Auburn. We have 9 winnable games against Miss State, Arkansas, and SC. And just kicked one of those away tonight. I was hoping the losses to Illinois were the anomaly in the season, but maybe they weren't.
Need to come back tomorrow and hopefully get a strong performance by Norman and Daniel, get some clutch hitting, and try and execute better. We can absolutely beat Miss State the next two games and win the series if we do that. If we don't go at least 4-2 against MSU and Arkansas, we are going to be in real danger of not finishing with a .500 record. And not qualifying for the SEC tournament on our own field. Which would be rock bottom for us.
