Softball team is scheduled to play Miss State today, Saturday and Sunday at 6:30pm, 4pm, and noon respectively. Those times are all subject to change with rain forecast for parts of the weekend.
Need to win this series in a bad way, after the awful losses to Illinois on Wednesday. This 10 game stretch with 4 games against Illinois and SEMO, and 6 against the weaker SEC teams of Miss State and Arkansas is where we have an opportunity to push our record well over .500 which would help us withstand the brutal last 5 SEC series including Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Auburn. Starting this stretch 0-2 was devastating.
Miss State comes in 23-3, ranked #21. They have padded that record, and their stats, against a pretty mediocre schedule though. Only 2 of their 23 wins are what I would call significant: early in the year they did beat #25 Ok State 9-4, and beat Nebraska 9-0, both good wins. NU is a solid team that is receiving votes in the poll and has a win over #7 TAMU. Miss State also trashed Illinois last weekend 12-1 and 9-5.
Miss States 3 losses have been to #13 Arizona State 3-1, Drake 1-0, and an 11-13 Cal Fullerton team 4-1. We of course beat Drake twice a few weeks ago.
The Bulldogs rank 3rd in the SEC in hitting at .343, and 4th in pitching with a team ERA of 0.96. They have a 4-deep pitching staff, with 3 of them sharing 23/26 starts, so they have depth, but no one who is going to come close to all conference honors.
If we are going to make a run at an NCAA tournament berth, and a run at staying out of the SEC celler this year, this is the team to start it against.
