Is a misunderstanding about what an "assault rifle" is. Folks hear that distinction and think that it means people can go and buy a fully automatic weapon without a background check/waiting period/etc. I saw someone hashtag #banmachineguns earlier today. As if purchasing a fully automatic weapon isn't already heavily regulated.

I'm absolutely in favor of putting some common sense restrictions on firearms depending on the mental acuity and/or violent nature of the individual as well as background checks/waiting periods/etc. However you can't have an intelligent discussion about these matters until people educate themselves on what is currently legal and illegal with regards to firearms.
