#6 Tennessee started a death march of 4 games with a really tough loss on the road at #17 TAMU, 79-76 in OT. UT scored the first 4 points in OT, then got outscored 9-2 in the last 2 minutes of the game. They still led by 2 points with just 7 seconds to go, but fouled them on a 3 point attempt, they made all 3, then UT turned the ball over while attempting to get off a game winning shot and gave up 2 more free throws for the final margin. Tough way to take your first loss of the season, but I think it validates that UT is a top 10 type team. Beating a top 20 team on the road is a tough proposition, and they nearly pulled it off. TAMU got a key win which will greatly enhance their resume as they fight for a top 16 national seed. Right now they are in 5 seed territory, barely on the outside looking in.
Miss State and South Carolina took care of business, but SC, maybe still hungover from the loss to Mizzou on Sunday, struggled to put away a pesky Auburn team at home, 71-63. SC had a big lead at halftime then got whipped 23-13 in the third quarter, to help limit the win to single digits. Auburn still has that great pressure defense, and won the turnover battle yet again, 20-12. To make matters worse, AA Aja Wilson (aka the least respected superstar by the officials, according to Dawn Staley), forced to be in there until the end in a close game, sprained her ankle with just 16 seconds to go. I hope she makes a speedy recovery and is better by the time we go to the other Columbia on Jan 28. NOT.
And Kentucky finally broke their 8 game losing streak, edging a mediocre Florida team on the road. They have a lot of talent but at this point their NCAA chances are slim and none I think. Georgia will be the 6th SEC team in the tournament barring a total collapse, and if there is a 7th team in (50/50 chance at this point), it will be either LSU or Auburn. But it could be neither, and it certainly won't be UK.
