While it was a tremendous win in and of itself, the really significant part is it gave us a key plank in our NCAA tournament resume. Beating mediocre teams means nothing to the selection committee. You need to have significant "signature" wins on your resume, because every team you are fighting in order to get a top 16 national seed will have them too. We just need more, and better ones than those other contenders do. And now we have a huge one, over a team that is a great shot to finish in the top 10 in the country by the end of the year. Before yesterday our signature win was against #23 Cal, which was still a very good win, on the road, although I see them dropping out of the top 25 by the end of the year. But the win over SC dwarfs that one, by a long shot.

The selection committee is going to be really impressed by 5 key games for Mizzou this year, not coincidentally, our 5 toughest games: SC home and away, Tennessee and Miss State at home, and at TAMU. We can slip up on the road against a quality team like Georgia or Kentucky, and it won't matter as much as how we do in those 5 toughest games. And we just hit the first one out of the park. 4 of those games are against teams that will in all likelihood finish in the top 10 by the end of the year. A top 10 win is gold is the eyes of the selection committee. And in contrast to poll voters, the selection committee is sophisticated enough to take into account we were missing an AA player in the loss to LSU.

I've felt that going 3-2 in those 5 toughest games, 4 against top 10 teams, would put us in a very strong position to get a top 16 national seed and secure the critical home court advantage in the first 2 rounds that is necessary to get to the sweet 16. And now we are 1-0 in those games, with 4 more left. That's the really big news.

It's going to be fun to see the home games against both Miss State and Tennessee, both of whom may be just a tad better than SC this year. You have to think now that the team absolutely believes they are going to win both of those games, which is exactly the attitude you want.
