could "shoehorn" up to 5,500. Brewer was designed as a multi-purpose building, to host basketball games, indoor track meets, commencements, etc. The court/floor was originally designed to be temporary and disassembled to allow for indoor track field events (shot put etc) and for ceremonies such as commencements (as seen in the above photo). Eventually, the b-ball court remained permanently on the ground. Only a small portion of the seating was permanent, specifically, the upper bleachers on the East side of the field house. All the rest of the seating were temporary bleachers that could be removed and used elsewhere, if needed. The West side bleachers (student seating) were used for both the field house and for the south seating at Memorial Stadium (prior to 1978).
