There was a lot of dissension around the program among the old boosters because of the firing of Onofrio a few years
earlier. Coach Al was Devine's guy and Devine was God. Powers was a good coach but from the few interactions I heard about he was not very personable with fans/boosters. Also heard he had some personal issues. I was told by a player who played for both Powers and Al that Powers was a better coach. After he had a losing season and didn't seem to be making progress the old guard pushed for a "true son"
(sound familiar) and we hired Woody Widenhofer.
