What is the reason for wanting to install turf?

I remember when the Cards had artificial turf and real turf is far better.

Is it the same field turf as the football field with the rubber granules? If so it seems like it would generate a lot of bad hops as the rubbers is displaced every time someone dives or runs on it.

I suspect it is the same as the football field where they can save money on paying to cut the grass and maintain the field.
