Interview with Clarence Gilbert

Clarence Gilbert (188-G-80, college: Missouri) former player of Darussafaka Istanbul (Turkey-D1) and TTNET Beykozspor (Turkey-TBL) player gave an interview:

Tell us how you decided to become professional basketball player

I finished my four year career at the University of Missouri. We went to the Elite Eight my final year and lost to Oklahoma. I had some workouts with a few NBA teams are there was some interest, but I decided to take the sure thing with Scavolini.

Inform us about your first team and what you remember most from that period?

My first team was Scavolini in Italy. The organization was great, couldn’t have asked for a better club, especially being a rookie. I played with a lot of veterans That showed me the ropes. Scavolini had one of the biggest arenas in Europe and The city loved the team.

Which country you enjoyed most to live in and which one to play?

Playing wise, Turkey was the best competition. I played two seasons there, with Beykoz and Darussafaka. Living wise was definitely Israel. I played for Hapoel Tel-Aviv. Everyone speaks English, the social scene is very vibrant, and we only practiced once a day, which was huge.

Do you have still contact with any of your former teammates? What are they doing now?

I’ve mostly lost contact with most of my older teammates. I keep in touch with Kelvin Gibbs, who I played with for 2 seasons (Turkey and Israel). He’s a police officer in California.

Which game from your career as a player will you never forget?

Has to be in Israel when we beat Ashkoron to go the Playoff Final. The game meant so much because we got the chance to play against Maccabi in the Championship, which had one of the greatest teams ever in Europe. Anthony Parker, Maceo Baston, Nikola Vujacic. They were all on that team.

Tell us about an offer you rejected and then regretted that decision.

Never. I ended my career with no regrets.

Tell us a few words about your life now? What are your plans and your new job?

I married my high school sweetheart, Chelle. We have three children, including a newborn son. I live in Miami. I am part owner of a tax office and a separate pharmaceutical office. My day ends at 1.00 pm, I go to pick up my kids from school and spend the rest of the day with my family. Couldn’t ask for a better life.
