and field training I was cautioned about getting involved while off duty for this very reason. Say you break up an armed robbery and are holding a criminal at gunpoint. Do you know what the person said who called 9-1-1? Officers responding could very well shoot you thinking you were holding a hostage at gunpoint.
No different from a friendly fire accident on the battlefield. Adrenalin is pumping, there has been a wild gun battle played out, and someone doesn't hear that the person not in uniform with a gun in his hand is a friendly.
