He hadn't shown the ability to be a knockdown shooter. And didn't develop that until the next season. Even if he was good enough to be the shooter, teams need more than that. In the NBA the top teams often have 4-5 players on the floor at a time that can shoot more d 30's or above from 3.
The shooting improvements that players like Ross and Brown underwent after transferring and as upperclassmen should give fans hope for players like Phillips, Barnett and Puryear.
