It isn't always into "acquiring the best team". It's about the TV numbers.
Oklahoma, Kansas, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Virginia, W. Virginia, New Mexico, and Arizona. Look to be the geographic state fits.
New Mexico has no major untapped TV markets. Arizona is Tapped. Indiana has Notre Dame, but they are a Big X/ACC lean.
The easiest dominos to topple at this point would be big 12 schools.
kU, KSU, OU, OSU, ISU, WVU, TTU, UT, BU, and TCU.
Of these I believe only Texas and Oklahoma would have serious considerations. Unless mega conferences were formed.
Since the SEC isn't controlled by Texas legislature TTU, TCU, and Baylor are out. The SEC isn't looking at the lower tier schools in the state. No offense intended. What will Texas add? With Texas A/M already in the fold, does Bevo add enough? Plus, I just don't think the SEC would deal with Bevo having it's own network.
I think the state of Oklahoma could add a lot especially with the population increase in the area. The sooners are a nice national brand with championships in both of the major sports. Unfortunately they have been accused of being handcuffed to Oklahoma State. If they can cut ties ... Geographically it seems to be a nice fit.
The B12 has 2 teams in the state Kansas. Problem is they are in a small TV market with only Kansas City and Wichita as viable markets. Adding Missouri really hurts the chances of either getting in.
kU would add another blue blood brand for basketball. Could be a nice natural rival for UK and Florida. However, their football team is one of the worst in division 1. I don't think the SEC would add them... for only 1 sport. It could however be a nice alternative to scheduling small school patsies, until the program got turned around.
KSU has a nice basketball tournament team and a nice sub-bowl quality football team. They add nothing in TV numbers.
If adding Missouri was to far north... Iowa State is way North, lol. It would really be an add just to compete in Big X's backyard.
West Virginia has been slighted once before... Is the SEC trying to stay away from the east coast, or do they believe the TV market is already secure?
The ACC is a nice trending upward conference.
Speaking of the ACC. Virginia/VT... money talks and the SEC may be willing to pay fees for the right fit.
My 2 cents. If we add 1 its Oklahoma. Add 2 Oklahoma and either Virginia or Virginia Tech.
