Mizzou would be a bubble team and maybe not make the NCAA tournament this year. After that brutal sweep on our home field by UK, Mizzou has clearly played itself onto the bubble. We will see where we are in the polls and RPI ranking when the dust settles from this weekend, but we could be in big trouble now.
I thought before this weekend we had a decent chance to get to 31-32 wins, give or take a game. That's not likely to happen now. And it sets up a weekday doubleheader with Wichita State that will go a long way to deciding if we even qualify for the NCAA tournament. We need at least a split with WSU, but right now even that is going to be a struggle.
Even if we win 2 against them, and get to 29 wins, we could easily get swept by both LSU and Ole Miss, and lose our first round game in the SEC tourney, which would leave us at 29-28, an RPI maybe in the mid 30s at best, and having lost 11 of our last 12 SEC games. In that scenario, despite the quality wins we have, I think we would be one of the last 4 teams selected, or in the first 4 teams out.
The best way to avoid that disaster is to take care of business and take 2 from Wichita State, then take at least 2 of the 6 conference games left against LSU and Ole Miss. A split with WSU and getting swept at LSU next weekend and we are in deep trouble. That would set up a must win scenario against a good Ole Miss team with a pitching staff far superior to ours, where we would have to sweep them, or at least win 2/3.
