he played on a travelling church team. athletes in action is in no way considered a professional team. i appreciate what he did and what they do, but to call that playing and coaching at a semi-pro level is like walking into the corporate offices of coca-cola saying you have experience in the food and beverage industry because you had a lemonade stand as a kid.
then he got a job from his sister-in-law as a glorified grad assistant. don't take my word, look up his responsibilities on the official MU athletic site. he edited videos and helped schedule summer camps.
then his old pal (who desperately needed some recruits in order to keep his job) called and offered him a deal. of course Porter Sr would take it - he'd be a fool not to. but there's no way Romar offers him a job if the deal doesn't include his kids.
same scenario plays out now. Cuonzo needs some recruits, and a few hundred thousand dollars and a pretend title are an easy price to pay for the #1 player in the country.
make absolutely no mistake: Michael Porter Sr is employed right now by the University of Missouri for one reason and one reason alone. it's not because of his coaching resume, his recruiting skills, his character, his ice cream truck, or his willingness to volunteer for the church pot luck.
the one and only reason he was hired will be on TV on Wednesday at 6:00pm on ESPN.
