Academics. Mizzou wouldn't take partial qualifiers, and had higher admission standards than most other B8-B12 (and certainly) B10 & SEC football factories.
These academic standards have (in modern day academia) become synonymous with "racism."
Mizzou coaches have been (t)asked to recruit with these standards, while KC & STL public schools were some of the worst in the country, teetering back and forth from being able to run themselves to requiring federal intervention. The Liberal academics running things in Columbia actually took glee in ruining the football program in the 80's, but the unintended consequences of their disdain for athletics (and their own collective cowardice) finally crashed with CS1950.
