They are the only one of those 5 teams to suffer an absolutely humiliating beat down as one of their losses, getting hammered by Michigan by 39 points, 49-10. That was an important part of their resume, their entire body of work, and it hurt them.
You could make a credible argument that Clemson and Ohio State were 1 play away from being undefeated, with Clemson losing by 1 point on the last play of the game, and OSU losing by 3 points on a late 4th quarter blocked kick return.
You could argue credibly that Michigan was 2 plays away from being undefeated, losing by 1 point on the last play of one game and by 3 points on the last play in double OT.
You can't say that about Washington, who lost by 13 to a very good and hot USC team (who is going to hammer PSU in the Rose Bowl).
But no contender except PSU has the distinction of just being hammered and totally dominated in a loss. The committee noticed that believe me.
