Do not underestimate the significance of the personnel losses from the 2015 defense. They are a significant factor in the fall off in performance. I.e.:
1. Terry Beckner was 100% physically in 2015 until injured against BYU. My understanding is while he was cleared to play in August, that it's normally the second year when a player with his injuries regains full physical capability.
2. Walter Brady was a frosh AA. None of the other notable Tiger DE's of recent years won that much acclaim. His 7 sacks in 2015 tied Carl Harrus for the team lead and were 1/4th of the team's total sacks in 2015. Brady has been replaced by walkon (great story about preservers cel leading to success) transfer who wasn't able to win a starting spot at NWMO St.
3. Kentrell Brothers had 152 tackles in 2015, more than anyone else in college football. He was a 2nd team AA (Mizzou has never had a first team AA LB). A strong case could be made that Brothers in 2015 had the best single season of any linebacker in school history.
4. Ian Simon (if memory servers) was a four year starter at safety and Kenya (sp?) Dennis was a two year starter at corner. There is no substitute for game experience. It's one thing to practice and another to play when it counts.
Yes, there have clearly been issues implementing the two gap control scheme, but most of the criticism ignores the personnel losses from 2015. I would argue that even if the Tigers were playing the same scheme as 2015, the numbers would not be as good as 2015 because of the small numerically, but high quality of the personnel losses.
