Based on that statement, the decision to go from the D linemen have responsibility for a single gap to responsibility for two gaps and having to "read the offense" before choosing which gap to attach was Odom's call. Apparently, Cross was given a good deal of discretion & leeway in implementing the new scheme.
Generally, the one gap scheme makes more big plays but gives up more big plays than the one gap scheme.
