to well known military units formed in 1861 in Louisiana named Tigers who fought in the Civil War.

We, of course, could point out the Columbia Tigers who were formed to defend the city from "Bloody Bill" Anderson in 1864.

While our football Tigers predate their football Tigers, it's awfully hard to counter their tradition of live Tiger mascots.
