really stopped recruiting effectively. They have talent and depth issues.
For us? Well our starting LT was supposed to start last year. Didn't get eligible. Our OL coach tried to implement some things that didn't work. Was dismissed. Our HC trumped our OLC's desire to play some of the younger guys. Our best OG was moved to LT, but was drafted as an OG. Our C, who was one of the best in the FBS when healthy, wrecked his ankle on the 3rd play of the season and was never the same. Our top RB wrecked his ankle on the first play of the season and was never the same.
The other 3 remaining OL played because they were SRs. If they were SRs this year, they would all be backups. For the OL, it was a lethal mix of (2) JUCOs not playing; one not eligible, the other lost the desire to play and quit and the lack of bodies/kids too young for SEC play. Recruiting failures, pretty much.
True FR QB not ready, albeit will be a great QB when he's done.
Our other top RB never recovered from a hip issue and has since retired. The JUCO stud came in out of shape, wasn't effective, and has transferred.
The WRs were poorly coached and our best WR coach was coaching the QBs for some reason. WR coach was axed and QB coached move back to WR coach.
So it was a myriad of shyt that led to a team that was 2nd-to-the-bottom in the entire FBS in O.
Our additions? Well, a complete overhaul of the coaching staff for one, and moving the retained ones to the position they coach the best.
An older and bigger Lock. A lot of depth at RB with the additions of Ross and Strong, plus a stud FR in Crockett.
The addition of Black at WR, plus the maturation of the young guys.
Howell getting eligible at LT, plus a grad transfer and JUCO for the OL. Again, the maturation of the young guys and adding Coach Elarbee and Coach Heupel.
Put it this way, I'll throw my hands up in disgust if we can only muster 9 points in SEC play again. NINE! If we average 21, which is under our historical SEC avg., we'd won the East again last year, esp. with the D we have.
