on a player leaving during the season for international play. In *most* cases, they let the player choose how often they're going to be involved in international play because chances are that's a star player and you don't want to **** them off.
FIFA schedules lots of their international dates during specific times to that EPL/La Liga/Serie A/etc. teams can be off the week those star players will be gone. It doesn't always happen, but it happens fairly frequently.
The MLS doesn't have to worry about it quite as much because we don't have nearly as many star players in the league as the European leagues do. You'll often see an international side missing one or two of their main starters in less important games, though, because the big name couldn't/wouldn't get away from their club team.
It's always an ongoing debate at the big clubs about which comes first, Club or Country.
