MU was ranked #1 the week after beating OU

in Norman in 1960. kU knowingly used an ineligible player the next game and was forced to forfeit their win that had knocked MU out of the #1 ranking.

Minnesota was declared the NC, but lost in the Rose Bowl. Mizzou beat #2 Navy and their Heisman Trophy winner, Joe Bellino in the Orange Bowl. National polls were not taken after the bowls back then, costing MU a NC.

What's ironic is that if the system by which NC was determined based on polls after the regular season but before the bowls was still in effect, Mizzou would have been the NC in 2007.

Mizzou was #1 for one week in 1960 under Devine, but was #1 for two weeks under Pinkel.
