obviously markets are a very important factor in expansion and academics matter too.
As far as how valuable a brand name is...that depends on the conference. If you don't have many and are seeking credibility or seeking to offset a declining image (like the Big 10 was) then a bigger brand name is more important. Thus you pick Nebraska and its small market.
If you're the SEC and you already have 6 of the all time top 20 programs in winning percentage and have won the last 6 national titles in a row, then bolstering your brand is relatively less important. If the new members can leverage SEC membership to their advantage and become powerhouses in their own right - good for them!
Its just that obtaining a brand name is a lower priority for the SEC than it would be for some other conferences given our circumstances.
Forgive my Barner friend here for the "cannon fodder" reference. That's just how they talk on the far.......errr....at Auburn. :^)
