Yes, UMass didnt play anything close to the schedule of a PAC12, Big12, SEC school, and that inflates her stats. And her ERA is not great compared to the other elite pitchers this year.
But Plourde clearly has some really nasty stuff and is capable of shutting teams down. My concern is Mizzou will get dominated by her and lose 1-0, 2-0, 2-1. Mizzou has looked helpless offensively against far less pitchers than her.
UMass lost to the likes of Alabama, Tennessee, Louisville, and Depaul, but didn't score a run in any of those games. But early in the season Plourde shut down two pretty good teams, Michigan and Georgia Tech. Shut out Michigan on 2 hits, with 16 strikeouts, and no-hit Georgia Tech, with 15 strikeouts. That shows what she is capable of.
She lead the nation in wins, strikeouts, and strikeouts per 7 innings. Her strikeouts were ridiculous, 520, with the next best in the nation at 414, and the next best after that at 346. Thomas by comparison has 262 strikeouts this year. Now, much of that is due to pitching 100 more innings than Thomas, but she still has 2.5 more SO's per 7 innings, a big margin.
Im really not sure which team I'd rather see Mizzou play in their second game, Depaul or UMass.
