If all you want is a bulletin board where you post a topic and then read a bunch of people's reactions to that single topic, newer formats are fine.
If you want to have actual discourse and conversations with other posters that is flexible and can morph into wherever the discussion leads, this is far superior.
To each his own, but I prefer the latter.
