The only "natonal brand", whatever the hell that means, in college athletics is Notre Dame football. I cannot think of a single school that enlists support from fans who did not attend that school or live in the same state on a significant scale other than Notre Dame and even that is waning. I think Boise State in football could be there at some point in the future but that's about it. There's a few afficiondos of a sport and HS players that might be gaga about a particular team but that hardly constitutes a national brand. From time to time, college basketball teams develop a short term following (e.g., Duke during the Laetner years) but it's fleeting. College sports, almost by definition, excludes "national brands".
