I'd say a University of Texas has a great national brand -- a nationally, even internationally, recognized reputation of excellence and superior resources. This brand crosses into academics, research, policy, etc.

kU Men's Hoops is a great property for ESPN/ABC during the season and CBS during the tourney. The logo, colors, fans, and history "say" college basketball for those broadcasters as well as any other property.

kU is not a "brand" for anything outside of the state of kansas and the greater Kansas City metro. It IS a national property for the networks for one specific function: men's college basketball.
